About
Serenity Guest House was once a grand lodging house with a small lodge and stables at the rear. Built together with its twin, which is now The Masonic Lodge. The family who owned the house also owned the private garden at the front (before there were any cars) and the cliff land all the way down to the beach. Eventually over the years the merchant family which owned a lot of the cliff, The Hendersons, sold off the land and the houses individually but Serenity Guest house Remained a board and lodging house for all of its life. Slowly being updated and upgraded with bay windows, electricity and running water, a privy block on the rear, and eventually a lift that was added in the centre of the stairwell in 2005. The Guest house has now been welcoming travellers for 230 years and we hope it will still welcome guests for another 230! more history of the building can be found in a book written by previous owner who pieced together the long and colourful history of the house. Some of the highlights include being a hideout for highway men in the 1800's and being shelled by a German battleship in 1914!
In 2005 the Hotel was bought by Dorothy and many upgrades were completed including the adding of the lift, a modern boiler system, and a full rewire of the building. She also restored the house's beautiful bay windows which had been tragically split in to 2 to create bathrooms in rooms 3 and 8. In 2021 at the age of 74 Dorothy retired and her son Steven Assumed the running of the Hotel
